On the long tail I found a nice description of business models centered around the free concept.
There is the razorblade concept perfected by Gillette
There is the ad-supported model
And then there is the digital concept where 90% of the users get the product for free and the last 10% pay for themselves and the others.

One of the commentators suggest that there should be a flatrate model as well: Buy a cable subscription and get 2 million tunes in the deal too….He calls it a “feels like free model.
