Excellent Study on Quoting Copyrighted Material in User-Generated Video

I came across a very well written and documented study on the use of copyrighted material in user-generated videos.

In “Recut, Reframe, Recycle” Pat Aufderheide and Peter Jaszi analyse how existing copyright protected material can be used by others in different ways. The study categorizes the different typse of use and the legal implications of use. The most powerful feature of the study is the collection of examples accompanying the catagories. The use of practical examples makes the points much clearer.

The study is a part of the American Unicversity’s Center for Social Media and the Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property and the Copyright and Fair Use in Participatory Media project. The program looks very interesting so give it a look if you are interested in fair use and copyright.
