Creative process and copying

Standing on the shoulders of giants and lending from predecessors is often walking a fine line between creating something new and plagiarism. I often read the blog “you thought we wouldn’t notice” which identifies examples of plagiarism.

However today I read the most comprehensive and well researched example of hunting down the question: is it plagiarism?

On Creative Review there is an excellent post on a recent Brothers “Printer Orchestra” spot being very close to a previous video by James Houston’s “Big Ideas (don’t get any)”.

In this case not only was the original film sent to the ad agency but the original artist was contacted by the agency as well.

The blog interviews a wide range of people involved in the new Brother commercial and the creative process. It’s a great insight in walking the line.
