A survey done for the danish recording industry shows that subscription based services for music leads to fewer illegal downloads. The only current danish subscription service – TDC Play – has over 100 mio. legal music downloads. A survey among the subscribers show that 43% have downloaded less music illegally. That could indicate that the subscription business model is working. The movie industry is eying the numbers and is considering if that could be the way forward.
An interesting fact however is that the level of piracy is unchanged 10% of the population has downloaded illegal music in the last 6 months…so they still download illegal music but fewer songs are downloaded.
